Surrounding Areas

Discover the charming countryside which surrounds the Saja in www.saja.es. Our favorite valley: the beautiful Valle de Cabuérniga, and its charming little towns (“pueblucos”) such as Renedo de Cabuérniga. Other excursions include Barcena Mayor, Saja, Fresneda, Ruente, Ucieda, Mazcuerras, Fontibre (source of the Ebro River), Oyambre, Potes, Liébana, and the fantastic caves of El Soplao, Altamira and La Cueva de Las Monedas. Another well-known destination is the Natural Park of Cabarceno, full of animals living in complete freedom, ideal for a visit with children. The possibilities in Cantabria are innumerable, including, of course, Santander, with its famous beach “El Sardinero” and the Magdalena Palace.
Nearby Beaches

Silió although it is not a beach site, because of its location and communication by new highways, it is equidistant from the sea and the mountain. In Santander highlights the beaches of Liencres, Suances (the latter is well known among surfers with the name of “crazy”). We also have the Tagle, or Miengo less known but with much charm. In Santander itself we have the Camello beach, the Magdalena beach or the Puntal beach (the latter is an almost wild beach, with dunes that can be reached by boat from Santander.) The “Pedreñera” leaves every 15 minutes).

Hunting and fishing

The area forms part of the Vaocerezo big game hunting preserve of the Saja National Reserve. Among the species to be found in this area are stag, roe deer and wild boar. Given the owner’s experience with this sport, La Finca del Monasterio can help facilitate access to the necessary hunting permits and local guides for interested clients.
The area is home to several rivers: Besaya, Erecia, Leon, Torina as well as many others throughout the region, all of which serve as a paradise for anglers of TROUT, SALMON AND CRAB. We can facilitate access to fishing grounds, guides and the necessary license requirements.
Culture Visits

Silió: San Primitivo and San Facundo Romanesque Church, XII Century. Declared a Historic Monument of Artistic Interest on April 23, 1970.
Of cultural interest in the surrounding areas we can also find examples of civil architecture such as La Torre del Linaje de Los Quevedo, across from San Martin de Quevedo Church (XV Century), which was declared a Property of Cultural Interest in 1992. In San Martin de Quevedo we also find the “Caserio Redondo”, included in the General Inventory of Cultural Patrimony of Cantabria.
With an eye to festivals, the celebration of “La Viajenera”, an ancestral festival with origins in Carnival, takes center stage. Although celebrated throughout the valley in times gone by, today Silió is unique in maintaining the tradition (1st Sunday of January). Another festival of Cantabrian character is that of “La Maya”, taking place the morning of July 24 on the eve of Santiago the Apostle.
